Military orders and reports; muster rolls and other forms; and a notebook kept by Reid during the Civil War. The notebook lists the inhabitants of Huntsville, Ala. as "guerillas" and "good Union men." Also included is an exhange of notes concerning military activities at Huntsville, including items from Napoleon Bonaparte Buford and Nathan Bedford Forrest. The notes concern the surrender of Huntsville and the idea of exempting areas of the city from bombardment. Other topics include the establishment of a general court-martial; a notice from the Negro population of Macon, Miss., inviting Union troops to a public dinner; and a report of pillaging and attempted rape by soldiers of the 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry.

Buford was the son of John and Nancy Hickman Buford. He was born in Woodford County, Kentucky on his family's plantation, "Rose Hill." At the time of his birth his namesake, Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French, was at the height of his power. Buford graduated from West Point in 1827 and served for eight years in the artillery and in 1835 resigned from the service to become an engineer. Reid, Edward F., fl. 1850-1888.

Reid was apparently born at Kinross, Scotland. In 1862 he enlisted in Company E, 3rd Indiana Cavalry. In 1864 he joined the 13th Indiana Cavalry, where he apparently did undercover work behind Confederate lines. Reid was mustered out as a captain.
